100 days. That’s how many days it’s been since Donald Trump was sworn in for his second term. In many ways it feels like 100 years. Indeed, some of the damage Trump and the Republicans have done to this country may take that many years to repair.
I just read an opinion piece in USA Today by a young woman who says that Trump has blown her mind with how amazingly awesome his first 100 days in office have been. Her highlights: DOGE has brought fiscal responsibility back! Tariffs are working! Trump is more popular than Biden!
Anyone in touch with reality knows that the first two things in her list aren’t true. Elon Musk has been nothing but reckless with his slashing and burning of the federal government. Not only does he have little to show for in the way of “savings” but as the Center for American Progress (CAP) puts it, DOGE’s efforts have “resulted in rolling blackouts of essential government services and the elimination of critical investments.” CAP has a handy tool where you can see how much DOGE has cost your own congressional district.
And, no, tariffs are not going great.
The third thing on her list doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. Biden isn’t in office anymore.
You know who else isn’t in office, especially at the federal level? People who have the courage to actually stand up and do something to stop the fascist Trump Administration. It would only take a few Republicans, who currently hold the majority in the U.S. House and Senate, to join Democrats to stop Trump’s worst abuses of power.
But, of course, they won’t do that. Fealty to Trump is a requirement to call yourself a Republican these days. And as we have mentioned before, there are not enough Democrats raising hell about the dire situation this country is in right now, either.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker gets it. In a recent speech he called out the “do-nothing Democrats” who “want to blame our losses on our defense of Black people, of trans kids, of immigrants, instead of their own lack of guts and gumption.”
Dude is probably going to run for President in 2028. That is, if we have an election in 2028. Trump and his minions are doing everything they can to consolidate and keep power.
There are plenty of people who do not like what’s happening under Trump. At all. His approval rating is in the toilet. People are also protesting across the country, which is great. But we need to see this kind of “guts and gumption,” as Pritzker puts it, in elected officials at every level of government.
And that’s where you come in. If you’re pissed off at the direction this country is heading, if you’re scared that your mom is going to lose her Social Security and have to move into your basement, if you’re disgusted by the never ending attacks on transgender people, if you think deporting toddlers with cancer is beyond abhorrent, if you want your kids to learn actual American history, warts and all, then run. Don’t let a single MAGA Republican fascist run unchallenged.
