A Seat at the Table

It’s Black History Month and right now, there are students in Texas learning that African “workers” came to the United States to help farm cotton. And it must be true, it’s in their textbook.

In 2015 a social post went viral when a woman’s son texted her a photo of a page of his textbook that contained the caption, “The Atlantic slave trade between the 1500s and the 1800s brought millions of workers from Africa to the southern United States to work on agricultural plantations.” She was outraged.

Nobody Makes It On Their Own: Mentorship turned Michigan Blue

Perhaps one of the most pathetic facets of conservative ideology is that a person becomes successful based solely on their own merit. The whole “self-made man” story gets applied to anyone who “makes it,” even when the story is so transparently false (see: Donald Trump). Conversely, anyone who doesn’t make it, well, that’s their fault alone. Sucks to suck, as my 13-year-old son would say.

What can I say about 2022? It was a wild year, but it didn’t suck nearly as much as 2021 or 2020. True, the bar is very low, but I’ll take it, damn it.
